Avoid Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, despite what anyone – including the people who have answered above – tell you. Tourist traps all. Going to Beijing and saying you’ve been to China is a bit like going to Midtown Manhattan and saying you’ve seen America. Its not even a little bit representative of day to day life there for the average person. I recommend Qingdao, Harbin, Dalian, Shenyang, Xiamen, or Hohhot…all middle-of-the-road cities that will offer a fine “tourist” experience while giving you a glimpse of China Shanghai or Beijing just can’t provide.

Definitely Shanghai, you will love it here! although not much to see, but this City has is own Character, not to be missed.

I suggest you see the sights that you fancy but also go into the countryside for a couple of days. Just get on a bus and go to a small, no touristy, town. There you will experience the ” real ” China ( after all most of the Chinese live in the countryside and NOT the cities that have been suggested by other posters here )
Prepare yourself for a shocking experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life. I lived and worked in the countryside of China for the first 12 months of my time there and can tell you it is nothing like the China that most people see or experience.

Two weeks, too short, but this should do for a first taste of this great country…China is as big as the US and Canada, so don’t expect to see and do everything in such a short period of time. I’ve traveled to China numerous times in the past 23 years and yet, there are still many provinces I haven’t visited…
First, my advice is to take a bite at the time. Of course, Beijing cannot be missed. It is not the best of China, but it is its showcase. You can’t miss it. Shanghai is another not-to-be-missed. Xi’an, Kunming, Dalian, Xiamen…oh well, all places are worth the visit…Anyways, I would limit myself to Beijing (side trip to the Great Wall at Simatai or Mutanyu) and Shanghai (maybe with a side trip to Hangzhou or Suzhou), and perhaps Xi’an if you have time. Prefer the train, it’s more fun and you can see the countryside. Plus it’s cheap and fast. To build your own itinerary, check the website below. Most important recommendation (beside carrying toilet paper wherever you go…and I mean it: wherever): get yourself the Lonely Planet guidebook to China, and the accompanying phrasebook.
Have the trip of your life! If you go with open eyes, open mind, and open heart, you will go back for more…

start in beijing..make your way down to shanghai and then xi’an to see the warriors

i stay at chicago too! lol but what i’m assuming you are going to the people’s republic of china and not china, if i’m correct go to shanghai, macau, hong kong, of course Chongqing!! i would out of all of them recommend hong kong and shanghai, especially shanghai, it is beautiful beautiful!! it’s like a better version of new york, nanijing road omg dude you got to check it out it’s like times square but 10000000000 times better and larger! pudong, man in shanghai whoot whoot! it’s amazing!! especially for young people in shanghai and Chongqing the clubs man they are awesome , but expensive!
